Sensex up over 250 points, Nifty tests 7,800; Jet Airways gains 3%
NEW DELHI: The S&P BSE Sensex surged over 250 points in trade on Thursday following positive trend in Asian markets. The 50-share Nifty index also was testing its crucial psychological level of 7,800.The gains on the benchmark indices were led by index heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, HDFC, ICICI Bank, ITC and L&T.The overall market breadth was positive, with xx out of every 10 BSE stocks quoting in the positive terrain.
The S&P BSE Midcap Index was up 0.98 per cent and BSE S&P Smallcap Index edged higher by 1.35 per cent.The S&P BSE Realty Index was thye top sectoral gainer, up 4.68 per cent. DLF, HDIL contributed most to the gains. The S&P BSE IT Index saw the least gains, up 0.37 per cent. Indian Infotech Software, OFSS capped the gains.
On the global front, major Asian markets were trading with a positve bias. Japan’s Nikkei was up 1.42 per cent, South Korean KOSPI added a modest 0.23 per cent, while Singapore Straits Times rose about a per cent. Meanwhile, China and Hong Kong were shut for trading to commemorate their World War II victory.
Snapping a two-day winning streak, the rupee depreciated 6 paise to 66.25 against the US dollar in trade on Thursday. The domestic currency had closed 3 paise higher at 66.19 against the greenback in the preceding session, thanks to the fag-end selling of the greenback by banks and exporters.
